Helping Rose Nafula Makokha
On October 21st a call for help reached the office of Mama Africa in Vienna. A Teammember in Kenya needed urgent help. Rose and her little daughter were close to becoming homeless. Rose had become unemployed because of Corona closedown of the restaurant, where she had worked before. She received no more payment, so that she had to owe the rent and was threatened with eviction. She was also, completely penniless, not able to buy anything to eat.
On the WhatsApp group page, the founder called for a relief effort within the team. One of the team leaders, Sammy, was assigned to review the case. He conducted several interviews - including one with the former employer, who certified Rose's good standing and was even willing to pay her half salary - the results of which confirmed the precarious circumstances in which Rose and her child found themselves.
In order to escape from the precarious situation, Rose had initiated a small trade that was to secure her livelihood. The purchase of the goods was already financed by her, but the delivery was delayed. She was sure she could sell the goods and use the profit to finance further purchases and livelihood. So she hoped and believed that she could escape the emergency with the one-time help.
The aid payments were already made on October 22. An emergency aid of 50.00 EUR from Mama Africa in Vienna and 10.00 EUR from team member Martha Gassner, an Austrian studying in Berlin, were transferred to Rose.
Only persistent inquiries from the Vienna office in the following period revealed that Rose had been mistaken and the delivery of the goods was delayed even further. She was ashamed to ask for help again. The Vienna office did that for her on the WhatsApp group site.
Thus, in early November, several small amounts of money were again transferred to Rose, this time also from group members in Kenya itself.
If you would like to help Rose to improve her situation permanently, please donate a monthly amount via PayPal and please let us know the period (via email) in which you will support Rose.
