About Kenya
Kenya is a country where agriculture forms a backbone of rural life and national economy. More than 70% of the rural population is employed in agriculture, and the sector contributes around a fifth of the country’s GDP (21.8% in 2023) and is central to food security and livelihoods. Most farming in Kenya is carried out by smallholder farmers, often on farms smaller than two hectares, using rain-fed systems.
Environmental challenges are significant, but Kenya is adapting. There is growing uptake of climate-smart agriculture, organic and agro-ecological systems, and technological innovations such as precision irrigation, agroforestry and digital advisory tools. Women, youth and smallholder farmers are receiving increased support through programs promoting sustainable methods, improved market access, and resilience building.
For a project like ours, Kenya offers a powerful opportunity: a large small farmer base open to innovation, a real need for improved infrastructure, training and connectivity, and a context where building sustainable herb production and secure value chains can make a transformative difference.
